Highlights of the Tour
The Naro Moru Route offers a challenging yet rewarding 3-day trek to the summit of Mount Kenya. This route is known for its scenic beauty and unique high-altitude traverse, but it's also considered the most demanding of the standard routes. Here's a possible itinerary:
Itinerary
Begin your adventure at the Naro Moru Park Gate, handling park registration and meeting your guides and porters.
Embark on a scenic hike through a diverse montane forest teeming with birdlife and unique vegetation.
The trail winds its way through bamboo forests and glades with vibrant wildflowers.
Enjoy a packed lunch on the trail, surrounded by the beauty of the forest.
As you gain altitude, the landscape transitions into open moorland with panoramic views.
After a steady climb, reach Metkei Hut, a basic hut used for a short rest stop.
Continue the ascent to reach Campsite 1, set in a dramatic location on the mountainside amidst giant heather plants. This is your designated overnight stop with tents or basic huts for accommodation.
Enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by your crew and unwind, marveling at the star-studded sky.
Fuel up for a challenging day with a hearty breakfast at Campsite 1.
Today's trek involves a significant ascent and traversing across a section of the Lewis Glacier.
The initial climb takes you through more open moorland with scree slopes and loose rocks.
You'll need to use crampons and possibly ice axes while crossing the Lewis Glacier, a guided and potentially technical section. Ensure you have proper training and equipment for glacier travel.
After conquering the glacier traverse, reach Austrian Hut, a basic mountain hut perched on a dramatic ridge with stunning views. Enjoy a short break for rest and hydration.
Descend from Austrian Hut to Lewis Glacier Camp, located at a slightly lower altitude but offering more comfortable accommodation for your overnight stay.
Tonight's dinner will be another treat prepared by your crew, and rest is crucial to prepare for the summit push on the next day.
Begin your pre-dawn summit push around 2:00 am, tackling scree slopes and steeper sections by headlamp.
The pre-dawn hours are typically the coolest for climbing. Dress warmly in layers and be prepared for strong winds.
As you reach higher elevations, witness the spectacular sunrise paint the sky with vibrant colors. The views from the upper slopes are truly breathtaking.
After a challenging ascent, reach Point Lenana (4,985m), the highest point accessible without technical climbing on Mount Kenya. Celebrate your achievement and take in the panoramic views encompassing the surrounding glaciers, vast plains, and even a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Spend some time at the peak capturing photos and cherishing the moment.
Begin your descent carefully, following the same route back to Lewis Glacier Camp.
After a short break, embark on a long descent down the mountainside, retracing your steps through various landscapes.
Finally, arrive back at the Naro Moru Park Gate, where your transportation will be waiting to take you back to your starting point.
