Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and remote wildlife haven located in northern Kenya, along the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Covering approximately 165 square kilometers, the reserve is known for its dramatic landscapes, which include arid savannas, rocky outcrops, and riverine forests. This reserve is renowned for its unique wildlife, including several species endemic to the region, and its rich cultural heritage linked to the Samburu people.

Destination Highlights

  1. Unique Wildlife: Samburu is home to several species not commonly found in other Kenyan parks, known as the “Samburu Special Five”: Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk (giraffe gazelle), and Beisa oryx. These unique animals make the reserve a special place for wildlife enthusiasts.
  2. Ewaso Ng’iro River: The life-giving Ewaso Ng’iro River flows through the reserve, attracting a variety of wildlife to its banks. Crocodiles and hippos inhabit the river, while elephants, buffaloes, and other animals come to drink, providing excellent game-viewing opportunities.
  3. Big Cat Sightings: Samburu is a great place to spot big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The open landscapes and riverine forests offer ideal habitats for these predators, making sightings relatively common.
  4. Samburu Culture: The reserve is named after the Samburu people, a semi-nomadic tribe known for their rich cultural heritage. Visitors can engage with local communities, learning about their traditional customs, dances, and crafts, gaining insight into their way of life and their relationship with the land and wildlife.
