Akagera National Park is located in the northeastern part of Rwanda, bordering Tanzania. Covering approximately 1,122 square kilometers, it is the largest protected wetland in Central Africa and one of the oldest national parks in the country. The park is named after the Kagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a complex system of lakes, marshes, and savannah plains. Akagera is renowned for its diverse wildlife, scenic landscapes, and successful conservation efforts that have restored populations of key species, including the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros.
